Case Study: Streeter Generating Station

This 40 MW coal-fired facility is located in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It has a 40 MW steam turbine (down exhaust). Streeter Unit #7 was placed into commercial operation in 1973; the PAC SYSTEM retrofit occurred in 1994.

The ACC designed for this plant is comprised of five cells in a 1 x 5 configuration.

The PAC SYSTEM retrofit was necessary to meet the following key issues:

  • during colder ambient temperatures, the plant's cooling tower created a visible plume and icing on a newly installed nearby highway. The ACC design had to handle 100% of the load during colder ambients
  • extreme cold temperatures (-30º F)
  • the area surrounding the existing turbine exhaust duct was extremely congested requiring four surface condenser taps and two turbine floor cutouts
