Case Study: Union County Resource Recovery Facility

Located in Union, New Jersey, this 50-MW waste-to-energy plant has a 50 MW steam turbine (down exhaust). It was placed into commercial operation in 1993 and had additional ACC systems operating by 2001. The plant had to remain operational during construction, with both limited lay-down area and construction hours.

GEA was able to work within these constraints to expand the original nine-cell ACC to 12 cells with a 4x3 configuration.

Our design met or exceeded the following client considerations:

  • ACC expansion to overhang plant access road with expansion column angles to matching the road's centerline
  • duplication of existing ACC unit
  • complete overhaul of ACC Control Logic to provide simultaneous multi-pressure operation capability
  • turnkey services with plant to remain operational during construction
