Case Study: University of Alberta

This 25 MW co-generation plant with a 25 MW steam turbine (down exhaust) is located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The plant was placed into commercial operation in 2001 to serve the university campus.

The ACC designed for this project by GEA had to meet extreme cold weather conditions and provide for a "standby" mode at night. GEA recommended an ACC comprised of four cells in a 1x4 configuration.

This ACC meets or exceeds the following requirements:

extreme cold weather (-49º F) with louvers and VFDs supplied
low steam load during cold weather operation (9% steam load), requiring specialized Control Logic
stand-by mode to accommodate times when less power is required, such as at night
steam duct routing only allowed it to exit the turbine building roof
